nopCommerce — open-source, built on .NET.
If your team already runs on .NET, nopCommerce is a natural fit — open-source with no licensing fees, full source access, and it slots into a Microsoft-stack environment more naturally than a PHP-based platform would.

When nopCommerce is the right call — and when it isn’t.
nopCommerce is worth considering when your business runs on Microsoft technology and you want to own the store outright. It is open source and built on .NET, so it drops neatly alongside SQL Server and existing .NET services, there are no licence or transaction fees, and your in-house developers can work on it directly rather than learning a new language. That suits manufacturers and distributors with established internal systems. It is a poor fit for a small retailer with no technical staff: you are responsible for hosting, updates and security, the theme and extension marketplace is small next to the mainstream platforms, and finding another agency to take it over later is harder. For most storefronts, a hosted platform is the sensible default.
