7 signs your business website needs a redesign.

A working site and a site that is actually working for you are not the same thing. Here is how to tell the difference, market by market.

Most business owners don’t wake up one day and decide to redesign their website. They notice something is off, live with it for a few months, then finally act. If any of these seven signs sound familiar, it is worth moving that decision up.

1. It doesn’t work well on a phone

Most local searches happen on a phone, often while someone is out and about and ready to act. If text runs off the screen, buttons are too small to tap or the menu is hard to find, that visitor moves on to the next result.

2. It takes more than three seconds to load

Every extra second increases the odds someone leaves before the page finishes loading. Oversized images, bloated plugins and cheap hosting are the usual causes, and Google measures this too.

3. You hesitate to send people the link

If you would rather describe your business than share your website, the site is working against you. A dated design quietly tells customers your business is dated too.

4. You can’t update it yourself

When changing your hours, adding a service or posting a photo means calling someone, the site falls out of date fast. A modern site lets you handle everyday updates in minutes.

5. It doesn’t show up on Google for what you do

If customers can’t find you when they search for your service and your town, the site is missing its foundation: page structure, local content, Google Business Profile and Search Console.

6. It doesn’t turn visitors into calls or leads

Traffic only matters if people take the next step. A clear call to action, a short form, tap-to-call and online booking where it fits are what turn visits into customers.

7. It isn’t secure or maintained

No HTTPS, outdated plugins or browser security warnings scare customers off and put your business at risk. If nobody is maintaining the site, it is falling behind.

What these signs look like in your market

The signs are the same everywhere, but how they cost you business depends on who your customers are and how they search. Here is what we see in the markets we serve across Florida and South Georgia.

South Jacksonville

A patient searching for a provider near Baptist Health or a shopper browsing San Marco's boutiques is almost always doing it from their phone. If your appointment form is unreadable or a button won't register a tap on a small screen, you lose that visitor before they see anything else you offer.

North Jacksonville

A dispatcher or contractor searching for a supplier between job sites is doing it from a truck cab or a job trailer, not a desk. If your site doesn't load cleanly on a phone with a weak signal near the port, you're losing the exact searches your business depends on.

Jacksonville Beach

Someone walking First Street or scrolling while waiting on a table oceanfront is deciding whether to visit you in seconds, all on a phone screen. If your menu is cut off or a button won't tap on the first try, they're back to scrolling instead of walking through your door.

Ponte Vedra & Nocatee

Between Sawgrass matches and midday appointments at a med-spa, most people here are checking your site from a phone in the car or between errands. If a menu won't open, a form won't submit, or images take over the screen, you've already lost someone who was ready to book.

St. Augustine

A visitor pausing outside an inn or shop on the cobblestone streets is checking your site on their phone before deciding whether to walk in. If the layout breaks or text runs off the screen right there on St. George Street, you've lost them to whichever competitor's site loaded cleanly.

Orange Park & Clay County

Someone searching for an auto shop or a dentist near Blanding Blvd is almost always doing it from a phone, often between errands at the mall or on the way to pick up kids. If the layout breaks or a phone number isn't tappable, they're calling the next shop on the list instead.

Fernandina Beach & Amelia Island

A visitor strolling historic downtown Fernandina or checking options from Amelia Island's beaches is deciding on a five-inch screen, not a desktop. If your booking form is unreadable or a button won't register a tap, that visitor moves on to the next search result before ever seeing what you offer.

Palm Coast

Palm Coast's growth is being driven by people searching from their phones before they ever set foot in town — a retiree comparing home care options or a family scoping out contractors before their move. If your site fumbles on that first mobile visit, you've lost someone who was never local enough to give you a second chance.

Daytona Beach

Between beachgoers pulling up your site from the boardwalk and Bike Week visitors searching on the fly, a huge share of Daytona Beach traffic never touches a desktop at all. A layout that breaks on mobile isn't a minor bug here — it's the version of your site most people will ever see.

Gainesville

Between classes, most UF students are pulling up a business on their phone while walking, not sitting down at a laptop. If your menu or booking page is unreadable on a small screen or a button sits too close to the edge to tap accurately, that visitor moves on to the next search result instead of fighting your layout.

Ocala

Between horse owners checking farm services from the barn and retirees browsing from a golf cart at a place like On Top of the World, Ocala's traffic skews mobile from two very different directions. A layout that breaks on either one costs you before you get a chance to make your case.

Lake City

Between farmers checking in from the field and truckers pulling off I-75 or I-10 to search on their phones, a huge share of Lake City's traffic never sees your site on anything but a small screen. If it doesn't work there, you're losing people who had almost no other way to find you.

Tallahassee

Between staffers checking a restaurant's hours from the Capitol breezeway and FSU or FAMU students comparing options between classes, most people finding a Tallahassee business online are doing it from a phone. If text runs off the screen or buttons are too small to tap, you lose them before they see what you do.

Orlando

Tourists searching for things to do from a theme park queue and locals comparing event vendors on their commute both do it from a phone. If your site breaks on that screen, you lose both audiences before they see what you offer.

Tampa

With commuters checking vendors from I-275 traffic and hotel guests searching from their phones near the Riverwalk, Tampa's traffic is overwhelmingly mobile. A layout that breaks on a phone loses both audiences before they see what you offer.

Kingsland, St. Marys & Brunswick, GA

Between Kings Bay families searching for services during a PCS move and Cumberland Island day-trippers looking things up from the ferry dock in St. Marys, most of this market finds you on a phone first. A site that breaks on mobile loses both audiences before they ever see what you offer.
