Google Ads vs Local Services Ads: which is right for your Jacksonville business?

How pay-per-click search ads and pay-per-lead Local Services Ads differ, where each one wins, and how most local businesses should run both.

If you run a home service or professional service business in Jacksonville, search for your own service on your phone and you’ll often see two different kinds of ads before any regular results: a box of businesses with a “Google Verified” badge, and below it, text ads that look like search results. The first are Local Services Ads. The second are standard Google Ads search campaigns. They’re both sold by Google, but they work very differently, and choosing the wrong one (or ignoring one) can cost you leads.

Here’s how each works, where each one wins, and how most local businesses should combine them.

The short answer

If your business is in an eligible category, run both. Local Services Ads tend to win the very top of the page for the most common, urgent searches and charge per lead. Search campaigns give you control over which jobs, keywords, areas and landing pages you pay for. Together they cover more of the results page than either one alone, and your Google Business Profile covers the map underneath.

How Local Services Ads work

  • You pay per lead, not per click. A lead is typically a phone call, message or booking request that comes through the ad.
  • Ads are built from your profile, not written by you. Google shows your business name, rating, review count, years in business and service area. There are no keywords or ad copy to write.
  • Verification is required. Depending on your category, Google checks licenses, insurance and background checks before you can show. Eligible businesses that pass display the Google Verified badge, which in late 2025 replaced the older Google Guaranteed and Google Screened labels.
  • Ranking leans on reviews, responsiveness and proximity. Your review score and count, how quickly you answer and respond to leads, your business hours and how close you are to the searcher all matter.
  • You can dispute invalid leads. Wrong numbers, spam and calls for services you don’t offer can be flagged for review.

LSA is available for many home service categories (HVAC, plumbing, roofing, electrical, pest control, cleaning, locksmiths and more) and a growing list of professional services such as lawyers and real estate. Availability varies by category and location, so check eligibility for your trade in Northeast Florida before planning around it. Our Local Services Ads service covers setup, verification and lead review.

How Google Ads search campaigns work

  • You pay per click. Every click costs money whether or not the person calls, so tracking and landing pages matter a great deal.
  • You choose the keywords. You decide which searches to show for, and which to block with negative keywords.
  • You write the ads and choose the landing page. That means you can push specific services, offers and areas, and send people to a page built for exactly what they searched.
  • You control geography and schedule in detail. ZIP codes, radiuses, bid adjustments by area, time of day and device.
  • It works for any business, not just eligible categories.

That control is the main advantage. If replacements are worth far more to you than repairs, or you want more work in Ponte Vedra Beach and less in a distant ZIP code, a search campaign can be built around that. LSA can’t target that precisely. See our Google Ads management for how we run search campaigns for local businesses.

When Local Services Ads usually win

  • Urgent, high-volume jobs where people call the first trustworthy option: a burst pipe, no AC in August, a lockout.
  • Businesses with strong reviews and someone who answers the phone quickly. LSA rewards both.
  • Owners who don’t want to manage keywords, ad copy and landing pages.

When search campaigns usually win

  • High-value jobs you want more of, such as installs, replacements or remodels, where you need to target specific searches.
  • Services or categories LSA doesn’t cover, or covers poorly in your area.
  • Businesses with a strong landing page that converts better than an LSA profile.
  • Markets where you want precise control, like separating Ponte Vedra Beach from the rest of St. Johns County.

How to run both without wasting money

Running LSA and search together works best when each has a clear job. A setup that works well for many contractors: LSA handles the core, everyday jobs, while search campaigns focus on the higher-value services, areas LSA doesn’t reach well, and branded searches. A few practical rules:

  • Track everything in one place. LSA leads and search conversions should land in the same report so you can compare cost per booked job, not just cost per lead or click.
  • Answer fast. Missed calls hurt LSA rankings and waste search clicks.
  • Keep reviews coming. Reviews drive LSA ranking and help your search ads and map listing too.
  • Don’t double-pay for the same job type blindly. If LSA reliably wins plumbing repair calls, your search budget may do more on water heater replacements or repiping.

Common mistakes

  • Running LSA with a weak review profile and wondering why leads are scarce.
  • Not disputing invalid LSA leads.
  • Running search campaigns with no call tracking, so you can’t compare them with LSA fairly.
  • Letting search campaigns show to people outside your service area. This is one of the most common Google Ads mistakes we find.

Frequently asked questions

Is Local Services Ads cheaper than Google Ads?

Not necessarily. LSA charges per lead and search charges per click, so the fair comparison is cost per booked job. Depending on your category, reviews and how well your landing pages convert, either can come out ahead. Tracking both properly is the only way to know.

Can I run Local Services Ads and Google Ads at the same time?

Yes, and most eligible businesses should. They appear in different places on the results page and do different jobs. Manage them together so budgets and job types don’t overlap blindly.

What is the Google Verified badge?

It’s the badge shown on Local Services Ads for businesses that pass Google’s screening for their category, such as license, insurance or background checks. In late 2025 it replaced the older Google Guaranteed and Google Screened badges.

Is my business eligible for Local Services Ads?

Many home service and some professional service categories are eligible, but it varies by category and location. You can check in the Local Services Ads sign-up flow, or ask us to check for your trade in Northeast Florida.

Do I need a website for Local Services Ads?

LSA runs from your profile, so it can work without one. You still need a strong website for search campaigns, organic search and the many customers who check your site before calling.
