Google Ads vs Facebook (Meta) ads for local businesses in Northeast Florida
Searching vs scrolling: how Google and Meta ads differ, which fits your type of business, and how to measure both honestly.
“Should we be on Google or Facebook?” is a question plenty of Northeast Florida business owners wrestle with. Both platforms sell ads, both can target your area, and both will happily take your budget. But they reach people at very different moments, and that difference decides which one fits your business.
The key difference: searching vs scrolling
- Google Ads reaches people who are searching. Someone typing “AC repair Jacksonville” or “estate planning attorney Ponte Vedra” already knows what they need. Your ad answers a question they just asked. That’s called intent.
- Facebook and Instagram ads (Meta) reach people who are scrolling. They weren’t looking for you. Your ad interrupts their feed, so it has to catch attention and create interest that wasn’t there a moment ago.
Neither is better in general. Google captures existing demand; Meta creates new demand. Which one you need depends on whether people already search for what you sell.
Side by side
| Google Ads | Meta (Facebook & Instagram) Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Reaches people | Actively searching | Scrolling feeds and stories |
| Targeting based on | Keywords and location | Interests, demographics, behaviors, location, lookalikes |
| Typical strength | High intent, ready-to-buy leads | Reach, awareness, visual products, offers |
| Ad format | Text, call, Shopping, video, display | Images, video, carousels, Reels |
| Lead quality | Often higher per lead | Often lower intent, needs nurturing |
| Works best for | Services people search for | Products and experiences people discover |
When Google Ads is usually the better fit
- Urgent or need-based services: plumbers, roofers, HVAC, locksmiths, attorneys, urgent care, auto repair. Nobody discovers a burst pipe on Instagram.
- High-value services people research: custom home builders, remodelers, med spas, dental implants, B2B services.
- Businesses that need calls now: search ads with call tracking produce measurable leads quickly.
For local service businesses, Google is almost always where to start. See our Google Ads for contractors and home services and Google Ads management pages.
When Meta ads can be the better fit
- Visual, impulse or experience purchases: restaurants, boutiques, events, fitness studios, tours and attractions in St. Augustine and the beaches.
- New products nobody searches for yet: if people don’t know your solution exists, they can’t search for it.
- Retargeting: reminding people who visited your website but didn’t book.
- Recruiting and community building for local businesses with a strong story to tell.
Rules that affect local advertisers
Both platforms restrict targeting for certain categories. Meta requires housing, employment and credit or financial ads to run under its Special Ad Categories, which limit targeting by age, gender and ZIP code. That matters for real estate agents, mortgage lenders and employers in Jacksonville. Google has its own policies for healthcare, legal, financial services and housing ads. Plan around these rules from the start rather than discovering them after an ad is rejected.
What about running both?
Many local businesses do well with Google as the foundation and Meta as a supporting channel: Google captures people searching right now, and Meta builds awareness and retargets website visitors so they come back. The order usually matters: get search working and measured first, then add Meta once you know what a customer costs on Google.
Whichever mix you choose, two things decide whether either platform works:
- A landing page built for the ad. Sending paid traffic to a slow, general homepage wastes it on both platforms.
- Conversion tracking. Calls, forms and bookings tracked through GA4, Google Tag Manager and the Meta pixel or Conversions API, so you can compare cost per lead across platforms honestly.
Questions to ask before you choose
- Do people search for what I sell? Type your service and town into Google. If you see ads and a map pack, there’s search demand, and Google is the place to start.
- Is my product visual or emotional? Food, fashion, fitness, travel and events often sell better with images and video in a feed.
- How fast do I need leads? Search ads usually produce ready-to-act leads sooner. Meta often needs more time and repeated exposure.
- Can I follow up quickly? Meta leads, especially from instant forms, are often less ready to buy and need fast, persistent follow-up.
- Do I have a landing page and tracking? Without them you can’t tell which platform is working, whichever you choose.
Three Northeast Florida examples
- A roofing company in Orange Park. Homeowners search after a storm or when they spot a leak. Google Search and Local Services Ads first; Meta adds little at the moment of need.
- A new brunch spot at Jacksonville Beach. People discover restaurants through photos and friends. Meta and Instagram can build buzz, while Google Maps and a strong Business Profile capture “brunch near me” searches.
- A med spa in Ponte Vedra Beach. Often both: Google captures people searching for specific treatments, and Meta keeps the brand in front of local audiences, within each platform’s healthcare ad rules. See Google Ads in Ponte Vedra Beach.

Frequently asked questions
Are Facebook ads cheaper than Google Ads?
Meta ads often cost less per click or per thousand impressions, but the people clicking usually have lower intent, so the cost per actual customer can be higher. Compare platforms on cost per lead and cost per customer, not cost per click.
Which is better for a local service business, Google or Facebook ads?
For most service businesses people search for, such as plumbing, roofing, legal or dental, Google Ads usually produces better leads because it reaches people actively looking. Meta can help with awareness and retargeting once search is working.
Which is better for a restaurant or retail store?
Often Meta, or a mix. Visual, discovery-driven businesses can do well on Facebook and Instagram, while Google captures people searching for things like “brunch near me” and directions in Maps.
Do you manage Facebook or Meta ads?
No. Our focus is Google’s ad platforms. If you run Meta ads, we can build the landing pages and conversion tracking those campaigns send traffic to.
Can I run Google and Meta ads at the same time?
Yes. Many businesses use Google to capture active demand and Meta for awareness and retargeting. Track both with the same conversion definitions so you can compare them fairly.
